On today’s show, I thought it might be fun to play some electronic music & music made using a moog synthesizer. Prior to the invention of devices like the Moog Synthesizer, electronic music was created by using audio equipment such as oscillators, or looping, manipulating or splicing magnetic tape, often adding reverb or changing tape speed to create sounds that seemed to come from space, and beyond. With the invention of the Moog synthesizer, recording these unearthly sounds in the studio became somewhat more easy, although these synthesizers were expensive, quite large, and had a complicated series of patch cords that were utilized to create different sounds. Records made by using the Moog, were often described as “gimmicky”, and not taken seriously. In 1970, Robert Moog invented the “Minimoog” making synthesized music much more accessible, which resulted in large number of people and bands using them to make records. I am uncertain how well or not well a number of these albums may have sold when they were released, but I do know that years later, I would find these albums at bargain prices at a number of record stores.
